Coroner’s office says second crash victim has died, identifies victims as Batesburg area brothers

Pond Branch, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher now confirms that the second victim of a horrible crash between a vehicle and a tractor trailer truck has passed away at the hospital. The collision occurred at the intersection of Pond Branch Road and Interstate 20 near Gilbert at approximately 8:20 p.m. Wednesday night. According to a family member who took to social media shortly after the accident, the two victims were brothers from the Batesburg-Leesville area of the county.

According to Coroner Fisher and her staff, Carlis Wade Epting, 27, was the brother that was pronounced dead at the scene due to injuries sustained in the collision. Harley Dillon Epting, also 23,was the patient that was extricated from the wreckage quickly and transported to the hospital by EMS. He was pronounced dead a short time after arriving there due to the injuries he sustained in the collision.

Fisher’s office said that the pair were travelling east on Pond Branch Road in the vehicle. The coroner said Wade Epting was driving when they hit the side of a tractor trailer as it turned left onto Pond Branch from Interstate 20. The car went under the trailer, trapping the brothers in the car.

Lexington County rescuers quickly converged on the scene from all directions. Firefighters worked to extricate the trapped pair while EMS crews rendered what aid they could while the victims and the car were still under the truck. Law enforcement quickly closed the road and began telling other drivers to turn around and detour.

The collision remains under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
