County of Lexington Animal Control Investigating Fatal Dog Attack near Chapin

January 2, 2018

Chapin, SC - County of Lexington Animal Control officers are investigating a fatal dog attack in which two family pets were killed after several dogs belonging to a neighbor entered a home in the 3000 block of Wessinger Road Monday evening and attacked them.

A County Animal Control officer arrived at the home just after 7:30 p.m. in reference to the attack after a homeowner stated that several dogs entered his home through a “doggy door” and killed his two dogs.

The homeowner, who was not home at the time of the attack, advised the officer that the neighbor’s dogs were inside of his home and were acting in an aggressive nature, not allowing the homeowner to enter his home. The homeowner was not injured.

The County’s on-call Animal Control Officer made entry into the home in an attempt to remove the neighbor’s dogs with a catch pole, but was unsuccessful. Shortly after the officer’s arrival, the owner of the dogs arrived on scene and was able to successfully remove them from the home.

Officers from County of Lexington Animal Services and the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department assisted in the burial of one of the homeowner’s dogs, and the Animal Control Officer took the second deceased dog back to the County’s Animal Shelter for burial.

Following further investigation of the incident, Animal Control Officers obtained a search warrant through the courts and seized 10 dogs from 42-year-old Ryan Ezzell’s home Tuesday afternoon. All of the dogs will be held at the County’s Animal Shelter, pending the adjudication of the case.

Animal Control issued Ezzell 16 citations, which include six citations for violation of restraint and confinement and 10 citations for failure to show proof of rabies inoculation.

Ezzell will appear in court on Jan. 16, 2018 to face the charges.
