Irmo boy's varsity basketball falls to Spring Valley 62-82

Excessive turnovers, fouls hurt Jackets in defeat

Irmo, SC (James Bowers) - Tim Whipple’s Yellow Jackets were stung by their own miscues Friday night. They wound up on the losing end of an 82-62 score against the Spring Valley Vikings.

The visiting Vikings found their shooters at the foul line too many times, as the Jackets quickly reached the ten-foul mark on a night where they finished with a total of 21 fouls. The 18 turnovers were also painful for Irmo. This is three more than their season average of 15. While they did out-rebound the Vikings both offensively and defensively, a 40% shooting success rate compared to Spring Valley’s 56% success rate for the night, and deadly free throw shooting, did Irmo no favors.

The Jackets had a 4-2 lead in the very early going, but the Vikings' defensive play began repeatedly denying Irmo points which the Jackets simply couldn’t overcome. It was then that Perry Dozier’s Vikings took control of the game. They put together a string of unanswered baskets while also taking advantage of Irmo miscues.

After going to the locker room with a 38-18 score in Spring Valley’s favor, Irmo came out on the offensive in the 2nd half, rallying to within 9 points of the Vikings at one point. Once again, the Jackets got into foul trouble, eventually reaching a point where Spring Valley picked up a number of points for the board thanks to all the free throw opportunities. When the final horn blew at Karl S. Lowman Activities Center, the score was Spring Valley 82, Irmo 62.

Leaders for the Yellow Jackets included Winston Hill, who had 13 points and 3 rebounds on each side of the ball, Trevez Caldwell, who scored a 3 pointer among his 11 points, and Javonte Young, who put 9 points on the board with Irmo.

The Yellow Jackets will have one week to rest before they return to the court with an away game against River Bluff next Friday. On Tuesday, Spring Valley will also play the Gators in Lexington as they attempt to pick up win number 8.
