West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – West Columbia police investigators are on the scene of a shooting that happened at a motel on Charleston Highway early Sunday. The first calls came in just before 4:45 a.m. shortly after the shots rang out. The shooting occurred at a motel in the 1600 block of Charleston Highway near where it intersects with Airport Boulevard.
Police officers responded quickly and were assisted by several units from Lexington EMS and the West Columbia FD. They found one man with serious injuries as a result of a gunshot wound to his abdomen. There was also a woman on the scene that appeared to have been assaulted during the incident. The condition of both of the victims are not known, but the woman’s injuries do not appear to be life-threatening.
The EMS crews quickly transported the man who was shot to the trauma center at Palmetto Richland with a firefighter driving. That is usually done when patients are in serious condition, and they are in need of the attention of both crew members assigned to the ambulance.
Investigators and crime scene technicians will be on the scene for some time collecting evidence and taking statements Sunday. It is not known if police had a suspect in custody as of this writing at 6:15 a.m. We will update this story throughout the day as we receive additional information.
