Batesburg-Leesville, SC - Last month, students in grades 6 through 8 at B-L Middle School participated in the school’s annual AVID Career Day. AVID, which stands for Advancement Via Individual Determination, is a program that uses proven, research-based practices to help close the achievement gap by helping all students prepare for success in college and/or their future careers.
23 professionals and 5 college students presented during the event and gave students information about their careers. Prior to the AVID Career Day, students at BLMS completed a career assessment/survey so that they could better determine their future professional interests. Then, they were able to select which speaker presentations they wanted to attend.
Faculty members at BLMS say the goal of the event was to connect the classroom to the real world so that students could link learning with their long-term goals, thus realizing the value of education. In addition, students were able to broaden their knowledge of careers that are available to them and speak with live persons from their professions of interest, thus making the opportunities more realistic.
