Fire destroys home Saturday near Swansea
Swansea, SC (Paul Kirby) – A fire near Swansea destroyed a double-wide mobile home just before 2:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon. The fire was in the 200 block of Woodland Drive between Sharpes Hill and the Swansea town limits. After the first fire personnel arrived, a second alarm was struck that sent more manpower rushing to the scene.
The first arriving responders saw the smoke from a distance while they were enroute. They had some trouble accessing the home with the first due truck, but when they did find the home’s drive, they reported that the structure was burning from end-to-end. It was an exterior attack all they way, meaning that the home was too far gone and much too dangerous for firefighters to enter to battle from the inside.
Several power lines in the area burned in to dropping to the ground. This hindered the firefighters who had hoses stretched around the home in several directions. The co-operative that services the home eventually arrived and they cut the power to the lines.
EMS was on the scene for stand-by and rehab of the fire crews, and public works eventually responded with a tractor to pull the remains of the destroyed home apart. This was requested by the fire commander so that his crews could fully extinguish any hot-spots that might be buried among the rubble.
The fire was marked under control in about an hour. Crews stayed on the scene for some time after that to ensure that all the fire was out and it wouldn’t rekindle.
