Red Bank, SC (Paul Kirby) – A serious accident that happened around 2:25 p.m. Wednesday on South Lake Drive in Red Bank trapped a patient in a small SUV requiring the fire service to extricate that person. Then, the patient was passed to the EMS crew and transported to the trauma center at Palmetto Richland. The collision happened just south of the large pond between Nazareth Road and Zaxby’s. Both outbound lanes were blocked by the accident for a time.
The crash involved the Nissan SUV and a large dump truck. The force of the impact pushed the Nissan across the sidewalk and into the guard rail. The door was caved in on the smaller vehicle, trapping an occupant in it. Firefighters from Red Bank, Edmund, and South Congaree responded, as did EMS, an EMS supervisor, and multiple law enforcement agencies. The firefighters used heavy extrication equipment to pry the patient out of the crushed car.
The EMS crew quickly transported the seriously injured person from the Nissan to the trauma center where specially trained doctors and nurses had been alerted. Paramedics onboard the ambulance reported that their patient was suffering from multiple traumatic injuries after the crash.
It was raining heavily across the area at about the time of the accident. That may have been a contributing factor to the wreck. The accident is being investigated by the SC Highway Patrol and troopers haven’t said what caused the crash. The condition of the person who was so severely injured hasn’t been released.
