Cayce DPS's investigation of events in I-77 vehicle fatality in conflict with coroners' statement

February 9, 2018

February 9, 2018 - On the morning of February 9, 2018, The Ledger reported that a driver of a vehicle had been killed while driving north in the south bound lanes of I-77 near the Charleston Highway exit late on the night of February 8th, 2018. The information published came after asking Cayce Director of Public Safety Byron Snelgrove some questions early on the morning of the 9th regarding the circumstances of the collision.

Later that morning, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher released a statement identifying the driver of the vehicle that was killed. She also said that the driver was Lisa Marie Hough, 40, of Wedgefield, SC. Fisher's statement continued by saying Hough, "was killed after her vehicle struck a vehicle in the northbound lanes and veered into the southbound lanes where it collided head-on with another vehicle." After we received that statement, we amended our first story thinking we had misunderstood Chief Snelgrove.

Just before noon on the 9th, the Cayce DPS released the findings of their investigation. In it they said on, "February 8, 2018 at approximately 10:20 pm the Cayce Department of Public Safety responded to the area of the I-77 exit ramp at Charleston Hwy/Fish Hatchery Rd. for a report of a major multi-vehicle traffic collision with entrapment. Upon arrival it was discovered that a 2009 Nissan made a left turn from Charleston Hwy onto the I-77 exit ramp going in the wrong direction. The Nissan hit a Chevrolet SUV at the intersection and fled the scene of that collision at a high rate of speed and continued to go the wrong direction on the I-77 exit ramp. The Nissan then struck a 2012 Dodge 4500 truck almost head on, disabling both vehicles.

Upon arrival, officers and EMS determined that the driver of the Nissan had been fatally injured in the collision. No other persons were injured in this incident.

The SC Highway Patrol, the Lexington County Sheriff's Department and the Lexington County Coroner’s Office also responded to the scene and are assisting with the investigation."

There has been no explanation regarding the conflicts in statements.
