Body recovered from Lower Saluda River near its junction with the Congaree River
West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – Investigators from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and Coroner Margaret Fisher’s office are investigating after a body was recovered from the Lower Saluda River below the area of the Riverbanks Zoo Thursday afternoon. This is close to the junction of the Lower Saluda and Broad Rivers that form the Congaree River in Columbia.
According to the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department, someone spotted the body in the river and dialed 911 to report it. The first law enforcement officers and emergency crews were dispatched to a reported drowning in the 700 block of Joseph Walker Drive off Laurel Crest Drive in West Columbia. Originally, the Lexington County Fire Service’s Swift Water Rescue Team responded with swimmers, a boat, and their supervisor. They were released to return to their quarters after West Columbia’s firefighters arrived and sized up the situation. There was also a crew from Lexington County EMS on the scene that stood-by for some time while the body was pulled from the river.
Right now, the sheriff’s department has said that law enforcement is in the preliminary stages of their investigation. The coroner will need to determine the exact cause of death before law enforcement agencies know what direction their investigation will take. The coroner will also identify the deceased after the family has received the proper notification from Mrs. Fisher’s office.
