Chapin’s We Care Center looking for volunteers to assist with various functions

Philanthropic organization looking to fill every role from front desk to pantry help

Chapin, SC (James Bowers) - For over 30 years, those who find themselves down on their luck in Chapin and the areas of Lexington and Newberry counties that surround the town have been able to count on the We Care Center in Chapin for a helping hand up. Now the organization is looking for some assistance of its own. The center has recently added new services that are challenging the current staff and volunteers. The center has now added Thursday service hours from 4pm - 6pm.

The center is seeking volunteers for a variety of roles. Among CWCC’s needs are a front desk receptionist to assist in greeting visitors and communicating with the organization’s clients, volunteers for all sorts of jobs, and donors. The group is also seeking volunteer staffers for its food pantry, which last year donated upwards of $700,000 worth of food to its clients. Roles in this department include the sorting and stacking of donated food and the filling of orders. We Care also needs someone to pick up foods from donors. Really, they could also use some helping hands for its other services which include a summer camp and several holiday related activities throughout the year.

We Care administrators also needs volunteers to fill is an interviewer. This individual calls prospective volunteers and asks them about their interest and background in the field of philanthropy. The volunteer prospect will then be invited to the center to shadow a current volunteer as they perform their duties in whichever position the prospective helper is interested. If the prospect is found to be a good fit for the role, he begins a brief training period before starting work at the We Care center. The duration of the work will be discussed when the individual begins volunteering at We Care. As Chapin We Care Center is a 501-C3 organization, time and expenses spent volunteering with the organization may be tax deductible.

The Chapin We Care Center performs a variety of services for those in need in the Chapin area. Its food pantry ensures that its clients don’t go hungry. This service relies on donations from local grocers such as Food Lion and Bi-Lo, as well as local restaurants such as Little Caesars and Pizza Hut, just to name a few of their donors. The center also assists clients with paying their expenses such as utility bills and gasoline to get to and from work, when they fall a little short.

The center doesn’t just offer food and financial help, they also put on classes on everything from job skills to nutrition education so their clients learn how to better their lives. Those without their own computers or internet access may also use the center’s computer lab, and children can experience the joy of reading when they take home a book from the center’s “Children’s Book Nook."

In 2017, the center received the distinguished “Angel of the Year” award from the South Carolina Secretary of State Mark Hammond. The award recognizes the state’s most ethical charitable organizations, based on how much of their donations are actually used for charitable work. The Chapin We Care Center has been a beacon of hope for Chapin area-residents who find themselves in distress, and now they need more hands-on deck to continue their mission.
