Yellow Jackets dominate at home, will face Sumter in Second Round
Irmo, SC (James Bowers) -Tim Whipple’s Irmo boys' basketball squad will play another day after defeating Wando in the Midlands Wednesday. The Jackets’ flexed their muscles in a 59-34 win over the Wando Warriors of Mount Pleasant in the opening round of the SCHSL 5-A playoffs at the Karl S. Lowman Activities Center.
Irmo began to take control of the game in the first quarter when successful Jacket shooting gave them a 15-6 lead at the end of the opening period. Wando kept it close in the second quarter with some opportunistic defense and good Warrior shooting put the away team within five at halftime 24-19. In the third quarter, Irmo’s defense took charge again, limiting Wando to only six points. Irmo’s scoring prowess put the game out of reach by the middle point of the fourth quarter, and over a minute and a half before the end of the game, Wando Coach Chris Warsynski was seen consoling his players on the end of their 2017-2018 season. The Warriors concluded their year with an 11-13 record and had finished fourth in region 7- 5A.
Leading scorers for Wando were Ty Buncum, who had 11 points for Wando’s Warriors, Nick Holland, who contributed 8 points for WHS, and Brandon Kinloch who had five points. Irmo’s offense was led by Trevez Caldwell, who scored 13 points for IHS, Winston Hill who had 12 points, and Raekwon Heath who picked up 11 for Irmo.
The Yellow Jackets will get to stay home for their second-round playoff game as the Sumter Gamecocks will visit the Temple of Doom on Saturday. The Sumter Gamecocks won the region 6 - 5A title with a 17-6 regular season record, and edged Goose Creek in a 53-52 contest to open their playoff run. Irmo vs Sumter is set for a 7pm tipoff on Saturday, February 17.
