S.C. Treasurer Curtis Loftis announces Lexington County student wins Future Scholar Financial Litera

Lexington, S.C. (Feb.15, 2018) – Kayley Clohecy, a fifth grader at Deerfield Elementary School in Lexington, was named the winner of the Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program’s Winter Contest for her representation of the financial literacy concept “needs versus wants.”

“Learning the importance of basic financial concepts, such as ‘needs versus wants’ is vital for one’s financial well-being,” said South Carolina Treasurer Curtis Loftis. “Future Scholar is excited to promote financial literacy through these fun contests as we prepare young people to properly manage their money.”

The Future Scholar Financial Literacy Program, offered to elementary schools across the state at no cost to taxpayers, is a web-based financial management course that focuses on skill building, budgeting and decision-making.

Eight elementary schools participated in the Winter Contest held in collaboration with partner EverFi, Inc. Students received the chance to earn one of several prizes by creatively reflecting on what they had learned in the program.

As first place winner, Kayley was awarded a Kindle Fire. Her teacher Emmalie Velte was presented with a $75 gift card for classroom supplies.

Second place was awarded to Olivia Chorey, a third grader at Leaphart Elementary in Columbia, and third place honors went to Odell Toney, a fourth grader at Lower Lee Elementary in Mayesville. Olivia and Odell each received a Future Scholar 529 prize pack, and their classroom teachers received gift cards valued at $50 and $25 for classroom supplies, respectively.
