West Columbia PD investigating business break in near Dreher and Augusta Roads Tuesday
West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – West Columbia Police Department investigators were on the scene early Tuesday of a business that was broken into near Dreher Road and Augusta Roads. Officers received notification of the break in just before 3:00 a.m. and had cars on the scene in a matter of minutes. The first police to arrive found that a glass had been broken out of the business and other patrol cars immediately began to flood the area.
The operator of a streetsweeper who was working in a nearby parking lot told some of the first arriving officers that he had seen a man run from the area of the Little Cesar’s Pizza toward the Chik-Fil-A parking lot across Dreher Road. That person was running east along Augusta Road toward Triangle City. A K-9 was requested from a neighboring jurisdiction to see if the dog could pick up the track. Although officers surrounded the building, they did not immediately enter to clear it because they didn’t want to disturb any scents that might confuse the K-9.
A short time later, a suspect who was on foot close by was detained by another officer who was checking the area for anyone who might seem suspicous at that time of the morning. The police have not said whether that person has now been placed under arrest or if they simply detained him for investigative purposes.
An investigator was called to the scene of the business sometime around 4:00 a.m. to gather evidence in the crime. Detectives were reviewing surveillance footage and following leads in the case. It has not been said what, if anything, was taken from the business. A representative of the establishment was enroute to help police officers determine that and cooperate in whatever way they could.
