Batesburg-Leesville FD puts new brush fire unit into service

February 21, 2018

Batesburg-Leesville, SC (Paul Kirby) The Batesburg-Leesville Fire Department has recently retired its old brush truck. Brush Truck 26 was a 1987 Hummer that the department had purchased from Federal Surplus and placed into service in 1999. The truck, when originally bought, was a four-door with a slant back cab design. It served the department from 1999 until February, 2018. Due to age and wear, the department saw a need to upgrade the unit with something that had less age and wear and tear on it.

Their new brush unit was purchased from the Gilbert-Summit Fire District in Lexington County by the fire department through fundraising efforts. It had been previously known as Brush Truck 8. When Lexington County fully took over the operations of the Gilbert Station, the rural fire district retained ownership of that unit piece of equipment. Now designated as Brush Truck 26, the new truck is a 2003 Ford F-450 diesel four-wheel drive unit. It has a 250-gallon water tank with a foam system for adding wetting agents to its water when necessary.

Before the new brush unit was placed in service, it needed of some engine work. This was done by the town. Once the repairs were complete and the truck was re-marked with the B&L logo, it was placed into service. While the unit is currently in service, it will continue to have upgrades made to it so that it best meets the needs of the department in Batesburg-Leesville.
