Chapin High School student detained after making threats to school this week

February 21, 2018

Chapin, SC (Paul Kirby) The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department has a Chapin High School student detained in connection with threats to the school earlier this week. The male suspect is charged with disturbing schools, breach of peace and malicious injury to real property. This was just released by Captain Adam Myrick with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department via social media.

In their statement, the sheriff's department said that Lexington County investigators detained the male suspect, whose name will not be released because he’s under the age of 17, Wednesday morning at the school. He’s being held by the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

“Our investigation into this threat began Monday when we became aware of a statement written on the wall of a Chapin High restroom,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “We take every threat, no matter its form, very seriously. Thanks to our work together with Lexington-Richland District 5, we were able to identify this suspect and hold him accountable.”

Koon said the investigation into the threat is ongoing. The teen will appear in Lexington County Family Court at a later date.

Other law enforcement sources not associated with the LCSD have said that the same boy was the one who also made threats regarding Dutch Fork High School, another Lexington-Richland District Five school. Both threats were made this week. This has not been corroborated by the Lexington County Sheriff's Department. Dutch Fork High School is located in the Richland County portion of the district and any threats there would be handled by the RCSD. We are working to get confirmation on that information now.
