Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – The three-year-old son of the victim that died on the scene of a head-on collision on Old Dunbar Road yesterday morning, passed away later at an area trauma center. Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said in a statement that the toddler was Cavon Cannon, whose mother was driving the car. The child was not in a restraint seat when the crash occurred. The mother who died on the scene has been identified as Mesia Alonda Johnson, 32, of Leesville.
SC State Troopers say that Johnson’s car crossed the center of Old Dunbar Road and struck an oncoming tractor-trailer truck head-on. This happened between 9 and 9:30 a.m. near the bridge over I-26. Witnesses who saw the crash and contacted The Ledger shortly after the accident happened said that the small black car was almost under the truck and the occupants of it were trapped. She said firefighters and EMTs arrived with moments and were working together to try and free the trapped victims. They were later seen trying to revive the toddler. Afterward, an ambulance sped away from the scene with a firefighter driving and its lights flashing and siren blaring.
SC State Troopers who are specially trained to investigate deadly accidents were seen at the site of the wreck as late as noon Friday. They were collecting information to prove exactly what caused the wreck. Later Friday, they said that the car simply crossed and hit the truck but gave no further explanation as to why. It may never be known what was happening inside the car prior to the accident that made the car swerve into the oncoming truck.
