American Legion National Commander visits Pelion post

March 6, 2018

Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) The National Commander of the American Legion visited the Pelion, SC Post 101 on Monday for a luncheon at the community building on Pine Street. The meal and meeting were held in her honor and as a way to raise money toward children’s causes in our area. Over its history, the Legion has been very active in a number of children’s programs. One of the most notable is American Legion Baseball.

According to the American Legion website, (click here) American Legion Baseball is a national institution, having thrived through a world war, several national tragedies, and times of great prosperity as well as great despair. The league still stands behind the traditional values upon which it was founded in 1925. American Legion Baseball has taught hundreds of thousands of young Americans the importance of sportsmanship, good health and active citizenship. The program is also a promoter of equality, making teammates out of young athletes regardless of their income levels or social standings.

Commander Denise H. Rohan, the highest ranking member of the legion, is the first female national commander of the organization in its 100 year history. As national commander, she oversees an organization that was chartered and incorporated by Congress in 1919. It is a patriotic veteran’s organization devoted to mutual helpfulness, mentoring youth, and sponsorship of wholesome programs in our communities. The group also advocates patriotism and honor, promotes a strong national security, and is devoted to service members and veterans. It is the nation’s largest wartime veterans service organization.

Denise Rohan was elected national commander of the 2 million member American Legion in August of 2017. She served on active duty until her honorable discharge in August, 1976. She and her husband, Mike, currently live in Verona, Wisconsin where she has served The American Legion since 1984. Later, she worked at the University of Wisconsin Madison until her retirement in 2012.

The members of the Pelion post were extremely honored to have Commander Rohan at their post in Pelion. That post has been in a state of resurgence as of late and is becoming more and more active in that community. An opportunity to have an officer of Commander Rohan’s prestige visit their meeting only solidifies the fact that the leaders of the post are headed in the right direction.
