Irmo High School Principal David Riegel announces plans to resign at the end of the school year

Irmo, SC – Irmo High School Principal David Riegel has announced his plans to resign and leave his post at the end of the current school year.

“After careful thought and consideration, I have decided to step down as principal of Irmo High School and pursue a consulting career that provides the flexibility I need to care for an aging parent,” Riegel said. “I will always hold Irmo High School near and dear to my heart and will forever be a proud Yellow Jacket. We’ve made many strides together, and I know the best is yet to come for the school.”

Riegel became principal of Irmo High School during the 2013-2014 school year, after serving as principal of Franklin High School in Franklin, Ohio from 2008 to 2013. At Irmo High School, Riegel oversaw the growth of the school’s magnet offerings, including the implementation of the school’s international arts magnet and the school’s new IB career-related magnet in partnership with the Center for Advanced Technical Studies. He also helped foster growth of the school’s International Baccalaureate Diploma Program.

Many facilities upgrades also have been made at the school under his leadership, including construction of the school’s state-of-the-art Center for the Arts, which includes a 600-plus seat theater funded through a bond referendum voters passed in 2008. Riegel launched several events to bolster community involvement and support during his five-year tenure, including the school’s Goodwill Brunch and Hall of Fame events which are attended by hundreds each year.

“We appreciate all the work that Mr. Riegel has done at Irmo High School,” School District Five Superintendent Dr. Stephen Hefner said. “Mr. Riegel honored the proud past of Irmo High and has created excitement for the school's future, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.”
