Batesburg-Leesville, SC - Members of the B-L Middle School Science Olympiad team traveled to Newberry College on Saturday, February 17th to participate in a statewide competition. The competition included hands-on design challenges and application of knowledge in the areas of genetics, earth science, chemistry, anatomy, physics, geology, mechanical engineering and technology. “By combining events from all disciplines, Science Olympiad encourages a wide cross-section of students to get involved. Emphasis is placed on active, hands-on group participation. Through Science Olympiad, students, teachers, parents, principals and business leaders bond together and work toward a shared goal,” according to the Science Olympiad website.
The team from BLMS placed 12th out of a total of 23 teams. The group had 7 top ten finishes, including a third place win in the “Write It, Do It” competition.
In order to participate in the Science Olympiad team, students can either be recommended by teachers/administration or volunteer. Throughout the team training, members must maintain academic and behavioral expectations. To prepare for the competition, the BLMS Science Olympiad team met twice a week for about three months. This marked the second year that students from BLMS have participated in the statewide competition.
