Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A car struck a power pole near the Glenn and Garners Terrace Roads intersection Tuesday afternoon killing one and ejecting another from the vehicle. At least one more was also injured. The status of the person ejected and the other passenger is considered serious according to the SCHP.
The county fire service confirmed that the power pole had been snapped in half and the transformer from the pole was hanging from the lines suspended above the ground. The first arriving units reported that the vehicle was on its side and one had died on the scene. Fire officials requested law enforcement officers respond using their lights and sirens because traffic was quickly backing up and there were onlookers gathering at the scene.
According to Lance Corporal David Jones of the SCHP, their investigation has revealed that the vehicle, a 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe, was driving on Glenn Road when it ran off the side of the road, the driver over-corrected, ran off the road on the other side, and then struck the utility pole. The driver was wearing a seatbelt and was the occupant that died at the scene. The two others were transported to the trauma center at Palmetto Richland.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office had personnel respond to join the investigation. They will ensure that the deceased’s family is notified prior to releasing that person’s identification. The condition of the other person that was thrown from the car and the other passenger that was injured is protected information and will not be released without their consent. We will update this story as we receive additional information.
