River Bluff Gator Baseball to begin defense of Forest Acres Classic title Monday

April 1, 2018

2018 Tourney features squads such as Dutch Fork, Cardinal Newman

Lexington, SC (James Bowers) - The 2018 River Bluff Gators baseball club is aiming for a repeat of past glories over spring break as they seek to defend their 2017 Forest Acres Classic title in the tournament at A.C. Flora High School. The Gators will open the Classic with play on April 3 against Walterboro’s Colleton County High School. The next day, the Gators will return to action against Virginia’s Miller School. The tournament features eight teams from three states. Also competing are Midlands-area squads A.C. Flora, Dutch Fork and Cardinal Newman, Laurence Manning Academy from the Pee Dee region, North Carolina’s West Cateret High School, and Virginia’s Miller School.

Collectively, the field of teams boasts three 2017 state champions (A.C. Flora (SC AAAA), Laurence Manning Academy (SCISA AAA), and The Miller School (Virginia Independent Schools). Additionally, Cardinal Newman is the 2017 SCISA AAA runner-up. The resumes of the participating teams underscore the quality of the field. A River Bluff repeat will be no easy task. The tournament will conclude with the championship game on April 5.

The 2018 River Bluff Gators are currently 10-4, with victories over Riverside and Blythewood to their credit, though the Gators have also suffered defeat at the hands of that same Blythewood team as well as Airport and Lexington. Some success in the Forest Acres Classic tournament would pave the way for another successful season for coach Mark Bonnette’s squad.
