"Senseless Tragedy" strikes Irmo as three teens die fleeing Irmo Police
Irmo, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Irmo Police Department is now confirming that three teens have died after fleeing from their officers in a chase last night. We had reported that one had died and two were transported. Now, Captain Courtney Dennis has confirmed the death of the others.
In a statement released from the department, Dennis said:
Last night after 9:30 pm, the Irmo Police Department attempted to pull over a vehicle that was speeding (55+ in a 35 zone). That vehicle fled from police and led officers on a chase through Irmo that ended after the vehicle lost control and collided with a tree. There were 6 people in the vehicle ranging in ages from 13 years old to 18 years old. One of the occupants, a juvenile was pronounced dead at the scene. The remaining 5 people were transported to local hospitals. Two other juveniles died at the hospitals.
Investigators are still working at this time to determine the who was driving the vehicle and what led up to the pursuit. Detectives did recover a firearm off one of the juvenile and the vehicle, a 2008 Pontiac G6 was recently stolen out of the City of Columbia Police Departments jurisdiction. The Irmo Police Department is working with the Lexington County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol’s MAIT Team.
Captain Dennis further said, “This is a sad day in Irmo and a senseless tragedy has struck our community. Once more information is available, it will be released.”
