National Weather Service confirms structural and tree damage near Irmo and Lexington was tornado

April 16, 2018

Irmo, SC (Paul Kirby) The storm damage Sunday afternoon near Irmo has now been confirmed to have been a small tornado by the National Weather Service. According to a message they sent over social media out of their office at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport (CAE), the service said, “Storm survey confirms tornado touchdown from Lexington to Irmo. Details to follow later tonight or tomorrow.” Later, they estimated the strength of the tornado to be approximately 80 mph which is the lowest measure on the US model scale making it an EF-0 tornado which produces light damage, according to their charts.

In the Wood Winds Drive area, a portion of the Irmo community that lays between Old Bush River Road and the Saluda River not far from Bush River Memorial Gardens, a large tree fell across the corner of a two-story house causing significant damages but no injuries. Fire crews from the Irmo Fire District responded and did what they could to assist as heavy rains fell and powerlines, trees, limbs, and just about anything that wasn’t tied down blew, flew, or fell across the area. The damage to that home was some of the most significant in Lexington County.

As their statement said, the NWS meteorologist will continue to compile damage reports from the storm before releasing any other information on its strength, path, and other particulars Monday. The storm pounded over Lexington County after 2:00 p.m. before quickly passing to our east. In one part of North Carolina, a confirmed tornado killed one person in his car before the storm system blew itself out and all was over.

We will update storm reports if more are received Monday.
