Gilbert, SC - Eighth-grade iCivics classes at Gilbert Middle School recently participated in the
Lexington Sertoma Club’s National Heritage Essay Contest, with the winning student honoring military personnel.
Students wrote essays relating to the topic of the national heritage of America, expressing their thoughts on patriotism, what it means to be American, the price of freedom and American heroes.
The Sertoma Club’s National Heritage Committee chose Kendall R. Brock as GMS’s school winner for her essay entitled “An American Hero.” Brock took her inspiration from Jonathan Humphries, an acquaintance from church, who is currently serving his country in Germany.
Brock received a plaque and a commemorative coin during an awards banquet held March 19.
