Irmo, SC (Paul Kirby) A home was damaged by a fire early Wednesday morning on Aspen Court in Irmo. Aspen Court is in a residential area that sits between Irmo Drive and Weeping Cherry Lane, both of which connect to Lake Murray Boulevard near the Wendy’s and other small businesses that front that busy thoroughfare. The fire alarm was received about 2:14 a.m. as an automatic alarm but while the first Irmo Fire District trucks were enroute, someone discovered the fire and dialed 911. At that point, the call was upgraded to a structural response adding units from the City of Columbia and the Lexington County Fire Service. Officers from the Irmo PD and crews from Lexington County EMS were also on the scene to assist.
According to IFD Fire Marshal Brian Haley, the first arriving crews found flames coming from the rear and roofline of the home. Firefighters pulled their hoses and made an attack, quickly stopping the fire. Haley said that most of the fire damage was contained to the garage, living-room, and kitchen of the two-story home. Haley said that firefighters left a small gas service line to the home burning after it was broken off to consume the escaping gas from it. A crew from SCE&G was on the scene shortly after 5:30 am, cutting that off to prevent any more gas from leaking.
The man and woman that lived in the home were displaced by the fire according to Haley. He said he didn’t know what exactly started the fire, but would begin looking into that after daybreak. No one was injured as a result of the fire.
