Chapin, SC (Paul Kirby) – A woman has died in a car accident on I-26 near the town of Chapin Sunday morning. The accident, which occurred near the 92-mile-marker just inside Lexington County, happened at approximately 15-minutes before 1:00 a.m. according to the SCHP. Sunday morning, Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher identified the individual who died as Sarah Helen Shelf, 21, of Simpsonville, SC.
State Troopers investigating the accident believe that the vehicle that Shelf was driving left the right side of the roadway and struck a culvert, which caused her vehicle to overturn. Firefighters and EMS personnel responded from the Chapin area stations of the Lexington County Fire Service to a reported accident with entrapment. They arrived quickly, but Shelf, who was wearing a seatbelt, was pronounced dead at the scene due to multiple traumatic injuries sustained in the accident.
An investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol is ongoing.
