Fire and EMS on the scene of a head-on collision with fatality and two trapped
Gilbert, SC (Paul Kirby) Firefighters and EMS personnel are on the scene of a reported head-on collision in the 3500 block of Augusta Highway near Golden Jubilee Road north of Gilbert. The calls regarding the accident started coming in just before 6 a.m. on Wednesday morning.
Firefighters from the Gilbert fire station were already on a brush fire threatening structures on Reedy O Smith Road so firefighters from the next closest stations were dispatched. They arrived quickly and reported that two vehicles were involved, and both had heavy front-end damage. They also said that they had two people trapped in the wreckage of the vehicles. It has since been confirmed that there is a fatality on the scene as well.
At 6:25 a.m., firefighters were working to free the trapped patients while the EMS personnel were providing patient care. The fire service had asked that Tower 10 out of Lexington be dispatched with additional manpower and heavy rescue equipment. The coroner’s office also has a representative enroute.
A wreck of this type will require that the highway stayed closed for some time while the coroner and the SCHP work jointly on their investigation. It is strongly suggested that motorists find a detour around if at all possible. We will update this story as more information becomes available.
