Man turns himself in after stealing puppy from Pets Inc.

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) - Peter Klein, 20, turned himself in Thursday morning after being charged with larceny of a dog. Investigators say Klein went into Pets Inc. in West Columbia recently with the intention of adopting a puppy. Pets Inc., a no-kill rescue shelter, denied Klein’s application to adopt because he wasn’t their minimum required age of 21. Instead of leaving, investigators say that Klein went into a room meant for staff only, picked up the 8 week only black lab/ mixed puppy, and then slipped out a side door with the animal.

Investigators with the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department say that they take all thefts seriously. Investigator Josh Skeen said that this type of small crime often turns into larger crimes if they are ignored.

After turning himself in, Peter Klein was booked into the Lexington County Detention Center. If convicted, Klein could face up to six months in jail for his crime.
