Lexington One Schools suspect there was an attempt to hack key IT system

May 16, 2018

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) Dr. Greg Little, superintendent of Lexington One Schools, sent a message to district parents late Tuesday night saying that someone may have made an attempt to access a key information technology system. In that e-mail sent on Little’s behalf, the district said, “We are reaching out to you tonight to let you know that we believe there was an attempt to access staff and student data through PowerSchool. Although we do not think this affects the parent portal and your PowerSchool information, you are welcome to change your password.”

The district provided the following instructions for that process: Go to the district’s website at https://powerschool.lexington1.net/public/, click on “Forgot Username or Password? Then choose “Forgot Password?” and fill out your Parent Username and Parent Email Address. The system will then email you information that will help you reset your PowerSchool password.

This will enable you and your information to be protected while law enforcement and the district’s Information Technology Office continue this investigation. The district said as the investigation continues, and they learn more about this possible data breach, they will reach back out to parents and bring them up to date. The district’s statement continued, “Again, we are taking a very aggressive approach to this by asking you to change your password as a precaution while we continue to work with law enforcement.”

This is not the first time something like this has happened. Just before Veterans’ Day last year, something similar happened and the district’s systems caught the attack with its firewalls. They acted as they were designed and shut the district’s systems down, blocking the attack. It took some time for the district to get all their systems up and running again after the protections did their job.
