Accident shuts down I 26, patient flown to area hospital by air

Columbia, SC (Angelica Iglesias) - A multiple car collision that occurred on Interstate 26 at approximately 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 22 caused emergency personnel to shut down the eastbound lane where the accident happened. The accident was in a small portion of the City of Columbia that is located in Lexington County.

Dispatch received the call at exactly 12:30 p.m. for the accident with a possible entrapment. Columbia Fire Department and Irmo Fire District were first on the scene and found a vehicle with at least one heavily entrapped. Once rescue personnel extricated the patient, they requested the response of a Lifenet helicopter because the individual was in serious condition. Other patients were taken to area hospitals by ground. The Columbia Police Department, Lexington EMS, Richland EMS, and South Carolina Highway Patrol were also on the scene.

According to Irmo Battalion Chief Brent Dominick, all agencies worked together to provide patients with the best possible care. SCHP troopers are still investigating the incident.
