West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A house fire in the 100 block of Argus Circle gutted a home before firefighters were able to bring it under control. The fire, which was dispatched to county firefighters around 3:20 p.m. on Monday, brought fire and EMS crews from across much of southern Lexington County.
Several of that region’s fire stations already had manpower and equipment tied up on a large but slow-moving woods fire near the Otis Spunkmeyer plant off Overland Drive when the call came in for the house fire in Belle Meade. The battalion chief who was already out on the woods fire broke loose and responded. The first arriving fire equipment’s officer reported that the home was approximately 25% involved in fire when he arrived. Firefighters continued to pour into the area from as far away as Lexington as they converged to assist with the burning home. Eventually, enough firefighters and equipment arrived on the scene to bring the blaze under control. Those crews were assisted by Lexington County EMS and law enforcement officers who helped with crowd control.
Lexington County officials haven’t released the damages estimate to the home, but the fire was intense enough to have totaled it. The American Red Cross was responding to assist the residents who had lost their house and possessions. The last county fire units left the scene sometime around 5:00 p.m.
