Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher’s office has now released the names of two people that were killed on Lexington County roadways this past weekend. One, a bicyclist, was struck and killed by a hit and run driver Friday night, and the other was the passenger in a truck being operated by a driver who officials think was under the influence.
The coroner’s spokesperson said Saturday that on Friday night, Tijhee Dijon Salley, 19, of Lexington was riding his bicycle along YMCA Road near Ruff Acres Lane when a truck hit him from behind. The driver of that vehicle then fled the scene. Troopers believe the vehicle was a light-colored pickup that now has damages to its front fender, hood, and possibly the windshield. Salley eventually died of multiple traumatic injuries early the next morning.
Then Saturday night, another vehicle was travelling on U.S. Highway 178 near Forts Pond Road in Pelion when the driver attempted to pass another vehicle. Apparently, that driver swerved back into the right lane, lost control, and left the right side of the roadway. The vehicle then struck a ditch, causing it to overturn several times, and the passenger was thrown from the vehicle.
According to Coroner Fisher, Robert Andrew Mays, 40, of Columbia was that passenger. He was transported to a local hospital and pronounced dead later that night. The driver of the vehicle, who sustained non life-threatening injures and who was under the influence according to the South Carolina Highway Patrol, was also transported for treatment. Troopers say It is unknown if either individual was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.
