Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A mobile home that had burned previously was completely destroyed in a second fire Saturday evening. The fire, which was reported just before 6:00 p.m., was near Old Wire Road and Old Wire Court just north of the Gaston town limits.
The fire service had just run several other structure fires, none of which were of any consequence. When the Old Wire call came in, the first due battalion chief could see the smoke in the sky from far away. When the first firefighters arrived, the home that was fully involved was recognized as one that had been heavily damaged by a previous fire some months before.
The fire was difficult to put out because it was very hot and humid. This quickly saps the strength of the crews. This is also a rural area where all the water to fight fire has to be carried in with tankers. Calhoun County’s Sandy Run station loaned a tanker truck and some manpower to that effort. Eventually the fire was put out and all the crews were able to leave.
The fire service did have a sheriff’s deputy respond to make a report of a suspicious fire. They also had a fire marshal back at the scene later looking into the fire.
