“Pancakes” split doubleheader with Macon Bacon on the road

Lexington County drops opening contest 5-0, rebounds for 8-1 victory in second game

Macon, GA (James Bowers) - At first, the “Pancakes” didn’t succeed during a road trip to Macon for a doubleheader against the homestanding Bacon. The Lexington County batters only mustered three hits in the opening contest, a total matched by Bacon batter Alex Canty. His effective hitting allowed his team to take the opening contest by a 5-0 count at Luther Williams Field.

Not deterred, Marshall McDonald’s club came out firing in the second game. The tone was set in the top of the second, as a theft of third base by Cole Tate enabled the shortstop to score when Channing Painton stalled the Bacon defense with a groundout. Holding the Bacon scoreless in their side of the second inning, the “Pancakes” added to their lead with a Carson McCurdy three-run homer in the top of the third. Another goose egg inning for the Bacon was followed by an even more fruitful fourth for the “Cakes.” First, Channing Painton went home on a Trace Whetsell double, then Jared Williams homered, taking Whetsell and Tyler Hamilton with him on to make it an 8-0 game. The Bacon finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when an Alex Canty single scored Conner Corbitt, but the home team did nothing else. The victory was Lexington County’s 14th of 2018.

Jared Williams,Mac MacCurdy, Cole Tate and Trace Whetsell led the hit parade for LC with two each. Brett Fulk easily won the pitching battle, allowing five hits but no runs in his five innings. Jacob Rye allowed the Bacon’s lone run but otherwise threw well while Griffin Hollifeld pitched the seventh inning, allowing two hits. For the Bacon, Jabari Richards, Zach Weisz, and Riley King each had a pair of hits. Pitcher Foster Roy had a night to forget; the “Pancakes” had seven runs on his watch.

The Lexington County Blowfish will host the Florence RedWolves tonight at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:05pm. The Macon Bacon will also be in action this evening, hosting the Savannah Bananas.
