Blowfish go 1-1 on Tuesday evening, topping RedWolves in delayed-finish game before falling to Florence in regularly scheduled tilt Tuesday

August 1, 2018

Florence and Lexington County played the final inning of game that had begun on July 24, before abbreviated version of regular scheduled contest sees Florence take 10-2 victory.

Lexington, SC (James Bowers) - The Blowfish began their Tuesday evening at Lexington County Baseball Stadium by handling some unfinished business. The second half of a July 24 doubleheader against the Florence RedWolves was called in the seventh inning before heavy fog necessitated that the finish be moved to July 31. The RedWolves and Blowfish were also set to play a regularly scheduled game that evening. The Blowfish owned a 3-2 lead at the time of the fog postponement and were itching to chalk that one in the WIN column.

Under sunny skies on July 31, the RedWolves and Blowfish finished their game. The leading Blowfish added one more run in the top of the seventh (they were still the visiting team as they were when the game began in Florence), and held the RedWolves scoreless in the bottom of that inning to take a 4-2 victory; A W it was! The Fish hoped it would be a sign of things to come on Tuesday evening. They were wrong.

The regularly scheduled game was shortened to seven innings. A single and subsequent stolen base by Florence’s Griffin Hulecki set up an opportunity to score when Blowfish catcher Tyler Hasleman errored, giving the RedWolves a 1-0 lead. The Blowfish did nothing in their side of the first inning. A double by McLendon Sears led to a score later in the second inning when an error and a wild pitch advanced him to third, and he was able to reach home on a Bryson Smith ground out even when the Blowfish defense managed a double play on that same at-bat. A Cole Tate score made it a 2-1 ball game in the bottom of the second.

Hopes for the Fish to regain momentum were dashed when Joe Simone scored on a bases-loaded single in the top of the third inning. Chris Botsoe’s fly out gave Griffin Hulecki time to score in that side as well, making it a 4-1 game.

A solo home run by Cody Cline in the top of the fourth was followed by another Simone score on a double by Griffin Hulecki to bring the RedWolf lead to 6-1. The top of the sixth saw Hulecki score when Greg Vaughn, Jr. doubled while Hulecki was on third. An error by Fish second baseman Channing Painton allowed Vaughn to get home on a McLendon Sears single. McLendon Sears was also able to cross home in the sixth on a Brody Gibson single. The Blowfish were able to make it an 9-2 affair in the bottom of the sixth when a Chaney Rogers single scored Hunter Lipscomb.

Griffin Hulecki’s double put Cody Cline across home plate in the top of the seventh. The RedWolves allowed nothing from the Blowfish in the bottom of the seventh to pick up their 21st win of the year. The Blowfish are now 17-29 as a result of the defeat, with only three games left in the 2018 season. This game really deflated our Puffy Pond Jumpers as playoff hopes are all but extinguished for the Lexington County ballclub this year.

Pitchers Parker Coyne and Griffin Hollifield split the game for the Fish with each allowing six hits. Five RedWolves scored on Coyne’s watch compared to four when Hollifield was on the mound. Cole Tate led the Blowfish offensive effort with two hits. Hunter Lipscomb, Chaney Rogers, Channing Painton, and and Chandler Redmond all had a hit for Lexington County. Rogers and Painton each had an RBI.

Jonathan Hughes went all the way for the RedWolves on the pitcher’s mound, allowing six hits and two runs. Griffin Hulecki led Florence with five hits, Greg Vaughn, Jr and Cody Cline each had two. McLendon Sears, Brody Gibson, and Bryson Smith each had singles.

The Blowfish will have tonight off before hosting the Forest City Owls for the first of their final three games on Thursday. The game is set for 7:05 pm. Meanwhile, the Florence RedWolves will also take a rest on Wednesday before going on the road to face the Macon Bacon Thursday evening.
