Brookland-Cayce beats Airport 32-14 in first of two matches between crosstown foes

August 25, 2018

Fumbles doom Eagles, Charipa, Pradibursi have big nights for Bearcats

Cayce, SC (James Bowers) - Airport’s offense suffered four first-half turnovers as the Eagles dropped a 32-14 decision to arch-rival Brookland-Cayce at Eagle Stadium Friday evening. The miscues marred otherwise decent performances from Nanders Lawrence, Brandon Caughman, and Dwayne Lewis, who contributed to a 310-yard offensive performance for the Eagles. B-C benefitted from the Eagle mistakes, turning several of them into scores, and enjoyed a solid outing by QB Reed Charpia, who had 188 yards passing. The Bearcats churned out a total of 304 offensive yards. The loss drops Airport to 1-1. Brookland-Cayce moves to 2-0 following this win and their victory over White Knoll last week.

The teams held each other scoreless in the first quarter. Airport struck first in the second when Caughman found Izaiah Walker-Warren for a six-yard score, giving the Eagles a 7-0 lead. B-C answered with a touchdown pass from Charpia to Pradaburski, however, the PAT failed, letting Airport continue to lead, 7-6. A B-C interception set up a short drive that ended with a 1-yard Charpia touchdown run. A two-point conversion failed, making the score-board reflect a 12-7 Bearcat lead. The teams took this number to the locker room at the half-time break.

Brookland-Cayce also opened the second half scoring, when Will Way had a touchdown from 11 yards out. Another failed extra point made it 18-7. A nifty drive by Airport concluded with a Lawrence touchdown late in the third. However, B-C iced the game with two long touchdown drives in the fourth quarter, bringing the game to a close with the Bearcats on top 32-14 as the clock ran out and the final buzzer sounded.

Airport will try to put the loss behind them next Friday as they travel to Swansea to take on the Tigers who fell to Gray Collegiate Friday. The game is set for a 7:30p.m. kickoff at Doug Bennett Stadium in Swansea. Brookland-Cayce will travel to the northeast side of town to face Spring Valley. That game is also set for a 7:30 kickoff. The Eagles and Bearcats will have a rematch at Brookland-Cayce on October 26.
