Brookland-Cayce student taken into custody after handgun found in backpack

West Columbia, SC - A 16-year-old student at Brookland-Cayce High School was taken into custody Tuesday after a small-caliber handgun was allegedly found in the student’s backpack, according to the Cayce Department of Public Safety.

The student, an 11th-grader, did not take the gun out while inside the high school, according to Cayce police, adding that no student or faculty member was threatened on campus.

Two assistant principals approached the student around 1:15 p.m. in a classroom, in connection with an unrelated incident of missing property at the school, according to Lexington Two officials and Cayce police. The student was taken from the classroom to a school administrator’s office, where a subsequent search of the student’s backpack turned up the handgun, according to Lexington Two officials and police.

The student was immediately taken into custody and later transported by police to the S.C. Department of Juvenile Justice.

The student, who has been suspended from school pending a disciplinary hearing, is not being identified because of his age.
