Gaston police officers call off search after a long day of looking for wanted suspect
Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – The Gaston Police Department spent Thursday afternoon searching for a suspect that initiated a pursuit earlier in the day and eventually abandoned his vehicle and ran off into the woods. Officers eventually called off the search because they knew who the suspect was, and felt they could find him through investigative measures.
According to Major Stephen Watkins of the Gaston PD, they were looking for a man that they and Lexington County had warrants for. Although the police have not released his name, they have described him as a white male who is 30 years old who was wearing no shirt. He was said to have several tattoos on his chest and arms and is around 6'1" tall and 170 lbs.
Police continued to search for the suspect for most of the afternoon and at one point, even enlisted the help of a state helicopter and K-9 teams. Eventually, they were searching the woods off Ben Spires Road close to Cassidy Road. Even though several citizens called in tips and sightings, somehow the suspect slipped their perimeter and escaped.
After 5:00 p.m., the police called off the search. Watkins said that the department is confident that they eventually will catch and arrest the suspect.
