Cayce DPS officer arrested after early morning wreck, now charged with driving under the influence
White Knoll, SC (Angelica Iglesias) – A Cayce Public Safety officer who was off-duty early Friday morning, wrecked his patrol car near White Knoll High School trapping him for a while in the vehicle.
The officer was freed by the fire service and transported to a local medical center for treatment. Since then, he has been transferred to the Lexington County Detention Center where he is expected to be booked for driving under the influence.
Officer Mario Fonseca was a member of Cayce’s K9 Team. However, the K9 was not in the vehicle at the time of the wreck. Since he was charged, he has been placed on leave without pay.
According to Chief Byron Snellgrove of Cayce Public Safety, the agency has launched an internal investigation to get to the bottom of exactly what happened. In a quick interview, Snellgrove said that the safety of all citizens, not only City of Cayce residents, is the department's top priority. He said that they hold all law enforcement officers to a higher standard and that no misbehavior of any kind will be tolerated by him or any other member of his leadership team.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is in charge of the wreck investigation and is expected to release a statement about Fonseca’s arrest soon.
