Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A serious car accident that involved three vehicles and left one lying on its side closed Charleston Highway in the 3800 blocked just after 6:15 p.m. Wednesday evening. This is close to the Old Wire Road intersection and an area where many accidents have happened in the past. Initial callers told 911 communicators that there were people lying alongside the road unconscious. Dispatchers sent fire, EMS, and law enforcement officers rushing to the scene to begin providing assistance and sorting out the mess.
Gaston firefighters were some of the initial first responders to arrive, and they reported that one vehicle was on its side and several others were involved. They also advised they were shutting down Charleston Highway for the safety of the people involved in the accident and themselves. Additional assistance was responding from South Congaree, but most of those resources were cleared while still enroute when it was discovered that no one was trapped in the vehicles. Battalion #2 eventually arrived, and the command of the scene was turned over to him. At some point, there was some question as to whether a helicopter might be needed for transport, but that was eventually decided against for ground transport by Lexington County EMS units.
Law enforcement officers from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department were critical in assisting with the traffic that was backing up quickly. Eventually, the scene was handed over to troopers from the SCHP for investigating into what exactly caused the crash.
