Fuel spills after train hits tractor trailer near Chapin

Chapin, SC (Paul Kirby) – A tractor trailer truck that was attempting to cross a railroad track between Chapin and Hilton was sideswiped by a CSX freight train Wednesday jackknifing the truck and causing it to leak fuel. The accident, which happened about 10:45 a.m., was in the 500 block of Chapin Road.

The fire service responded with their ladder company out of Chapin, a battalion chief out of Lexington, and a hazardous materials unit out of Round Hill. According to Harrison Cahill, spokesman for Lexington County, approximately 150 gallons of diesel fuel was spilled as result of the collision. The fire service blocked Chapin Road for a short period of time as a precaution. Apparently, the driver of the truck wasn’t injured.

Representatives with the SC Department of Health and Environmental Control were notified of the fuel spill. They will coordinate with the truck and its owner to ensure the mess gets cleaned up.
