Serious car crash in Gaston causes one person to be flown to trauma center

Gaston, SC (Paul Kirby) – A serious car accident shortly before 2:00 p.m. Thursday injured a patient so severely that he was flown by medical helicopter to a local hospital. The accident happened on Hwy. 321 south at its intersection with Busbee Road in Gaston close to the county’s Gaston Fire Station.

EMS personnel, firefighters, and law enforcement officers quickly responded to the incident where a Ford SUV had rolled over and was lying on its roof in the median. Once they assessed the situation, they requested the assistance of a Lifenet helicopter. These are normally based out of Irmo at a helipad behind the Irmo Fire District’s headquarters off St. Andrews Road. The helicopter landed at Lanier Construction Company on Hwy. 321 near Glenn and Gardners Terrace Roads. A Lexington County ground ambulance transported a patient to that landing zone where he/she was handed off to the helicopter’s flight crew. There has been no report released on the condition of that person.

Law enforcement continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.
