One incumbent re-elected to Lexington Three School Board, challengers take two open seats
Batesburg-Leesville, SC (Angelica Iglesias) – Lexington School District Three voters made their way to the polls Tuesday, November 6, for three open School Board seats in record numbers. There were three incumbents that ran for re-election with two challengers, Frances K. Bouknight and Eddie Cogdill. The incumbents were current Board Chair Gariane P. Gunter, Cheryl A. Burgess, and Billy Berry. Jermaine Barr and Patrice Jones also announced themselves as write-in candidates.
Challenger Frances K. Bouknight, and incumbents Cheryl A. Burgess, and Gariane P. Gunter took the three seats. Bouknight received the most votes with 1,811. That win was followed by Gunter with 1,479 votes. The last seat went to Burgess who received 1,475 votes. Billy Berry gained 1,190 of the votes cast, but this was not enough to retain his seat on the board. Eddie Cogdill received 979 votes. There were also 633 write in votes.
One of the biggest issues the upcoming Board of Trustees will have is how to handle the defeat of their bond referendum. They now have to decide how to move forward without the money for a new high school and other projects.
