Dixiana, SC (Paul Kirby) – Law enforcement officers are investigating an alleged armed robbery that occurred Tuesday morning at the Kangaroo Express in the 3500 block of Charleston Highway near the SC State Farmers Market. This is where Charleston Highway and Gardners Terrace Road meet in the county. According to our sources, the robbery happened sometime around 5:00 a.m.
The suspects were reportedly wearing camouflage and black clothing and had masks covering their faces. They were armed with shotguns. This is very early into the investigation, so information is limited. The sheriff’s department has not released the exact number of suspects involved or their full description. Investigators were enroute to the scene to review video and interview witnesses and specially trained officers will be processing the scene for evidence.
Other law enforcement agencies in surrounding jurisdictions were quickly notified to be on the lookout for anyone who fits the description of the suspects. Those calls for officers to be vigilant and careful went out about 5:20 a.m. As a number of municipalities including Cayce, West Columbia, Gaston, and Richland County are all in proximity to this area, there is a high probability that another officer might see and stop the fleeing suspects. Commanders wanted to ensure that all officers knew that these suspects were armed and considered extremely dangerous. This area is on Charleston Highway (US 321) south close to the Hwy. 21 split. It is also close to the on ramps for I-26 and I-77. The chances for escape are endless once the thieves leave the store because of these easily accessible get-away routes.
