Woman walking along Leaphart Road early Sunday morning struck and killed by vehicle

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A woman who was walking along Leaphart Road close to the I-26 overpass was struck and killed by a vehicle early Sunday morning. According to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher, the accident happened around 12:30 a.m. Lexington County EMS, the West Columbia FD, and law enforcement officers responded to the scene of the accident and tried to render assistance.


According to Fisher, Kathy Diane Altman, 53, of Lugoff was pronounced dead at the scene due to the injuries she sustained when she was hit. The driver of the vehicle that struck her, who was not injured, stopped at the scene to render aid immediately.


The accident remains under investigation by law enforcement.
