West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A home in the 1400 block of F Avenue was heavily damaged by fire Wednesday morning. The single-family home had smoke and flames coming out of the side and rear when the first firefighters and equipment arrived on scene from the West Columbia Fire Department. The call was received by the county’s 911 center at approximately 9:45 a.m.
According to Operations Chief Marquis Solomon of the West Columbia department, crews and equipment from the Cayce Department of Public Safety, Lexington County, and the City of Columbia Fire Department all worked together to extinguish the fire. Solomon said that more than 25% of the home was damaged by the blaze, but smoke and water were also a factor when looking at the overall impact the disaster had on the small home. He said that SCE&G had to disconnect the power from the home and that the fire itself made the home uninhabitable.
According to Solomon, the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.
