Garbage truck burns in Quail Hollow early Friday

West Columbia, SC (Paul Kirby) – A garbage truck caught fire and burned early Friday morning on Feather Run Trail in the Quail Hollow area between the Lower Saluda River and the Lexington Medical Center. The first due firefighters from Lexington County’s Corley Mill station reported that the truck was fully involved in fire when they arrived.

The call regarding the truck being on fire came in just after 4:00 a.m. The county dispatch center first sent Ladder 30 out of Corley Mill to the fire, but they asked for another station after receiving word it was a garbage truck. Engine 9 out of Oak Grove was then sent to assist. Callers reported to the dispatchers that the truck was exploding before the first fire equipment arrived on the scene. This is not uncommon in a fire like this where the tires popping, or a hydraulic cylinder bursting can sound like bombs going off.

When the crew of Ladder 30 arrived, they realized that the water they carry on the truck would not be enough to fully extinguish the fire. Luckily, the Quail Hollow area has reliable fire hydrants and they laid a supply line in from the closest to a position where they could attack the fire consuming the burning truck. Shortly after that crew began their fire attack, the team from Oak Grove arrived and began assisting them. They were able to bring the fire under control in about 30 minutes but remained on the scene for some time after that making sure that the fire was out. Equipment finally began returning to their stations just before 6:00 a.m.

The truck was a total loss. The company that owned the truck has not been identified. It’s not known if anything else was damaged during the fire.
