Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – One woman has died following a vehicle versus pedestrian accident near Lexington Tuesday morning. The collision happened on Augusta Highway near Lexington High School and the new Lowe’s Food Store west of Lexington.
Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the pedestrian who was killed as Dianne Sullivan Wells, 36, of Lexington. Fisher said that Wells was crossing the roadway when she was struck by the vehicle. Wells was pronounced dead at the scene due to her injuries. The driver of the vehicle, who was not injured, stopped at the scene to render aid.
Lexington County’s 911 Center dispatched EMS crews, law enforcement, and firefighters from the county’s Lake Murray fire station after receiving the call at about 5:10 a.m. The first reports from the scene indicated that a pedestrian had been hit by a heavy truck in the highway. It was still very dark at the time of the crash. First responders quickly arrived and found that Wells had died on the scene. This is the fourth traffic fatality reported in Lexington County in three days.
The Lexington County Coroner’s Office and the SCHP will investigate the death and the wreck respectively. Normally, the SCHP M.A.I.T. team investigates fatal collisions and that could keep the roadway closed for some time.
