Spectacular Lexington car crash Saturday night may have been due to mechanical failure

December 30, 2018

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – In what must have seemed like a stunt from a movie, a car apparently ran across a parking lot near the 5200 block of Sunset Boulevard Saturday night, crashed through a wooden fence close to the Hobby Lobby, sailed off a retaining wall, landed at the bottom of an embankment, and came to rest overturned in a yard off Spruce Glen Road in Hope Ferry Plantation. Lexington police officers are now saying this vehicle may have had some type of mechanical problem that caused its driver to lose control. The call came in after 10:00 p.m. and brought multiple law enforcement officers, EMS, and units from Lexington County Fire Service rushing to the scene.

The first arriving officer realized the difficulty that anyone would have accessing the crashed vehicle because of the substantial drop from the parking lot to the ground where the car came to rest. The car sat on its roof at the bottom of the man-made drop off created by the retaining wall that establishes the parking areas of the businesses. The difference in the two levels was at least 25 or 30 feet. That quick thinking officer had his dispatch reroute EMS personnel to Spruce Glenn Road where they would be able to get to the car and the patients. He then began to render aid to the occupants and report on the situation until the medical team arrived. Firefighters used lights on the end of a ladder truck from Corley Mill station to illuminate the scene from the parking lot so that rescuers could see to work around the car that lay on its roof below.

Police officer said that the occupants of the vehicle were transported to local medical facilities with what is apparently non-life-threatening injuries.
