Pelion community shocked by arrest of well-known businessman
Pelion, SC (Paul Kirby) – Much of the Pelion community has been shocked this week after learning a well-known and respected local businessman was arrested in North Carolina after fleeing Lexington County in an attempt to evade law enforcement. Sam Jackson, a man whose family have been prominent members of the community for years, was taken into custody by officers after an investigation into financial irregularities in a business he had been a part of. Jackson was a member of the management team at the business owned by the Shumpert family, as well as a principal partner in another local business. His family has been in the area for generations and Jackson has served on Pelion’s town council and been involved in other community organizations in the past.
Frank Shumpert, the owner of Shumpert’s IGA and several other Pelion area businesses and the mayor of Pelion, confirmed that Jackson was no longer with the company. Shumpert said in a short phone interview, “Sam was a long-time, trusted member of our business.” He expressed regret that things have happened as they have with his former employee, partner, and longtime friend. Shumpert said that this was now in the hands of law enforcement and he will have no further comment regarding the matter as the investigation runs its course. He asked that the everyone support Jackson’s family, their friends, and the community with their prayers as they deal with this startling news. The law enforcement agencies involved were unavailable for comment Saturday.
